The Electronics and Electrical Communications Engineering Department had the pleasure to welcome Eng. Hazem AHMED - one of its 2005 alumni - and currently a Ph. D. Candidate at Friederich-Alexander University (Erlangen-Nurnberg) in Germany. Eng. AHMED delivered a talk at the EECE Department - in Library Hall - that was attended by many EECE Staff and students. It was followed by a Q&A session which helped illustrate some of the new trends in the RFID Research and current activities taking place in his lab. Following is a short description of the talk and a brief biography for the speaker.

Abstract:

In recent years Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has evolved into a fast growing market all over the world. New implementations of RFID systems and products associated to this technology have been presented within the last years by different companies. Although RFID was discovered many years ago it has evolved and developed mainly during the last decade because of new low price of production technologies especially for the RFID tags.

There are a lot of advantages of RFID systems compared to other identification technologies like bar codes. First, bar codes need a line of sight connection to be identified which is not necessary in the case of RFID which can work over long distance. Second RFID is supported to have full automatic supply chain and accordingly it can reduce the cost of the vendor using it. Moreover, it can be adapted to different environmental conditions, such as rain, dust and dirt and still operates extremely well. Also, data stored in bar codes are fixed
and cannot be changed, however in most RFID systems; data inside their electronic memory can be changed. Furthermore, RFID systems have the capability of multiple simultaneous scans of tags which decreases the timing for data collection.

Speaker's Biography:

Eng. Hazem AHMED received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the Department of Electronics & Electrical Communications (EECE) of Cairo University in 2005 and 2010, respectively. He was appointed as a Research Assistant in the EECE Department for two years (2005 - 2007). From 2007 till 2012, he was appointed as a Teaching Assistant at the German University in Cairo (GUC). In 2012, he was enrolled at the Friederich-Alexander University (Erlangen-Nurnberg - Germany), as a Ph.D. candidate. His current research interest are in the Design and implementation of anti-collision algorithms for passive RFID systems.
