Summary:

This thesis demonstrates in house design and implementation of low earth orbit small
satellite telemetry module which suits remote low earth orbit satellites. The Telemetry
Module plays an important role to monitor the satellite health and status of operation by
gathering the telemetry data from sensors distributed among the satellite subsystems in
addition to the telemetry frames collected periodically from other subsystems to reflect
their status and sequence of operation. The telemetry module keeps all data while being
in orbit till the satellite communicates with ground control segment to download all the
stored data. The analysis of the downloaded data enables the operator to plan for the
satellite operation and solve the satellite health problems. The telemetry module can also
play an important role to master the satellite bus and receive ground instructions
directly through the communication subsystem in case of emergency situations till the
satellite returns to normal operation condition, otherwise the satellite's full function fails
and the satellite is lost in space. Telemetry module is simply a data acquisition system,
but with firm and strict conditions to function in space with high reliability. The design
and implementation should comply with space standards using space qualified
components or fully redundant less grade ones to resist the space environment for the
satellite life time. In this research work, a simple low cost telemetry module is designed
and implemented using commercial and industrial grade components according to
ECSS standards.
