Talk by Dr. Octavia DOBRE (IEEE Fellow and Professor at Memorial University, Canada) on 2 May 2023

It has been a great pleasure for the EECE Dept. at Cairo University to welcome Dr. Octavia DOBRE (IEEE Fellow & Professor at Memorial University, Canada) and her accompanying delegate, within the department premises. Professor DOBRE and her delegate met with EECE Staff in the Council Meeting Room at 4.00 pm where she kindly made a brief presnetation of Memorial University and its Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. Then, Professor DOBRE made a very interesting and comprehensive presentation - that was attended by EECE Staff and EECE students - with the following details:

Date and Time: Tuesday, 2 may 2023 - 05:15 pm

Place:  Hall 8202 (Hammam Lecture Room)

Title:
Full Duplex Communications for the Next Generation Wireless Networks

Abstract :

With work on the 3GPP Release 18 ongoing, 5G-Advanced is on its way. An unprecedented proliferation of new Internet-of-everything services is continuing, such as extended reality, aerial vehicles, automation of industry, and connected autonomous systems, leading to the digital transformation of the society. In the last few years, the research community has started to look toward the next generation (6G) of wireless network, which aims to bring us closer to the fully connected, intelligent digital world of the future.

This talk will briefly discuss the vision for 6G wireless networks, and then focus on the full duplex technology which theoretically doubles the sum rate and enables reduced latency. In particular, different machine learning-based methods will be presented to tackle the critical self-interference problem in full duplex transceivers. Results from measurements will be presented. The talk will conclude with directions for future investigation in the next generation wireless networks.

Brief Bio:

Octavia A. Dobre (IEEE Fellow) is a Professor at Memorial University, Canada. Previously, she was with the New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA and Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest, Romania. She was a Visiting Professor with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA and Université de Bretagne Occidentale, France. Her research interests include technologies for B5G wireless, blind signal identification and parameter estimation techniques, as well as optical and underwater communications. Her work was acknowledged through Best Paper Awards at various conferences, such as the IEEE ICC, IEEE Globecom, and IEEE WCNC.

Dr. Dobre is the Director of Journals of the IEEE Communications Society, and served as the inaugural Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of the IEEE Open Journal of Communications Society and the EiC of the IEEE Communications Letters. She was General Chair, Tutorial Co-Chair, and Technical Co-Chair at various conferences.

Dr. Dobre was a Royal Society Scholar and a Fulbright Scholar. She is an elected member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
