Dr. Fayez GEBALI, EECE Alumni 1972 & Professor and ECE Department Chair at University of Victoria (Canada) will give a talk on January 21st, 2013. Details for the talk are as follows:

Date and Time: Monday, 21 January 2013 - 12:30 pm

Place:  Hammam Lecture Hall (8201), EECE Department, Cairo University

Title:
GF(2m)  Multiplication: Multithreaded/ Multicore Implementations

Abstract :

We present in this talk linear and nonlinear techniques for design space exploration for two different iterative algorithms of finite field multiplication over GF(2^m) based on irreducible trinomial. The nonlinear techniques discussed here allow the designer to control the workload per processor and also allows the communication overhead between processors to be reduced. Eight systolic architectures are obtained from applying these techniques and have simple hardware structure with neighbour-to-neighbour communication. By comparing to some of the corresponding existing bit-level systolic structures, digit-level systolic structures, and bit parallel structures, the proposed systolic structures have less area complexity compared to most of them. The time complexities of the proposed designs are slightly higher than most of the corresponding existing designs.

Brief Bio:

Fayez GEBALI received his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering (first class honors) from Cairo University, his B.Sc. in Mathematics (first class honors) from AinShams University, and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering form the University of British Columbia where he was a holder of an NSERC postgraduate scholarship. Dr. Gebali is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria. His research interests include parallel algorithms, networks-on-chip, three-dimensional integrated circuits,  digital communications,  and computer arithmetic. He has authored three books, entitled: "Analysis of Computer and Communication Networks" in 2008, "Networks on Chips: Theory and Practice" in 2009, and "Algorithms and Parallel Computing" in 2011. His recent book has been translated into Chinese in 2012, and was published by Tsinghua University publication, which is the top University in China.
