LTE-Advanced Communication System

Group:
Telecommunications
Topic Overview:

The Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular communication system aims to achieve high data rate to mobile subscribers. It is based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SCFDMA) in the uplink, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas, and adaptive modulation and coding techniques. The new releases of the LTE system, known as LTE-Advanced (release 10 and beyond), are still in the research phases. A number of research topics will be investigated in these releases such as Carrier Aggregation, Multi-cell Interference Management and Coordination, Coordinated Multi-point (CoMP), Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), Pico and Femto-cells, Advanced Relaying, Network Coding, as well as adoption of Self-organizing Networks (SoN) for network management. A unifying theme along these areas is radio resource management with a view on boosting system capacity and performance. A target for LTE-Advanced is to achieve spectral efficiency of 10 bits/sec/Hz which is a very challenging goal.

Objectives:
  • Proposing innovative schemes for boosting system capacity using the above techniques (Carrier Aggregation, CoMP, Interference Coordination, etc).
  • Construction and validation of an accurate simulation environment for a 4G communication system, both at the system level and at the protocol level. The system will be used to study the performance of the proposed schemes and explore the potential of applying SoN techniques. The system can also be used for radio network planning for future LTE and LTE-Advanced macro, pico, and femto-cells.
  • Explaining the behavior of communication systems tested in various testing environments.
Outcomes:
  • At least 10 research papers to be submitted to prestigious conferences and journals.
  • 6-8 M.Sc./Ph.D theses
  • Standards contributions to be submitted to the 3GPP
  • Potentially some outputs can be formulated as patents.
