Green Wireless Networking

Topic Overview: 

The digital revolution has resulted in the ever increasing carbon footprint contributed by information and communication technologies (ICT). It is estimated that ICT contribute around 2 to 2.5% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions every year. The growth and persistence of this trend is likely to continue as ICT further penetrates new domains, supports emerging applications and services and becomes an integral part of everyday life. Thus, there has been recent growing interest in the communications and networking community to design energy efficient systems that would lead us to greener societies.

Objectives: 

Our aim is to train and educate graduate as well senior undergraduate students about the importance, major challenges and key research issues in green wireless communications and networking. This, in turn, entails acquiring the following skills:

  • Developing basic understanding of the fundamentals of wireless networking and the major research thrusts in cellular, mesh, MANETs and sensor networks.
  • Getting familiar with energy-efficient wireless networking aspects as they emerged last decade for wireless sensor networks.
  • Developing critical understanding of the energy efficiency challenges and energy bottlenecks in state-of-the-art wireless networks (e.g. Cellular, WiFi) as well as emerging communication paradigms (e.g. cognitive radio networks and cooperative relaying).
  • Developing novel energy saving mechanisms, at various parts of the wireless system and different layers of the networking protocol stack.
  • Developing necessary network modeling and performance evaluation skills, e.g. stochastic models, queuing theory, network optimization and wireless network simulation, e.g. ns-2, OMNET++, and OPNET.
Outcomes: 
  • Novel algorithms and protocols for energy efficient wireless networking.
  • Simulation results.
  • 1-2 technical papers per year to be submitted to prestigious networking conferences and journals.
  • 2-3 M.Sc. theses
Resources: 
  • Coverstipend for 2 Research Assistants, registration fees for conference presentation, publication fees for published journal papers, travel expenses for conference attendance as follows:
    • Research Assistant stipend per month: 1500 LE
    • PI salary per month: 8000 LE
    • 1 conf. participation per year (Registration, Airfare, Per diem): 13800 LE
    • Journal publication fees per year: 1700 LE
  • 2-3 M,Sc. Students.
  • 1 Ph. D, Student.
  • Equipment: 4-5 wireless sensor network platforms, e.g. ZigBee, with energy harvesting capabilities (e.g. solar energy), OpenBTS platform for emulating and testing energy-efficient cellular networks.
